Before You Pack

  • Pack lightly and leave room for souvenirs
  • Soft-sided luggage fits easily into safari vehicles
  • Always carry your passport, airline tickets, and money on your person—consider a fanny pack or neck pouch
  • For domestic flights in Tanzania, luggage is typically limited to 15–20 kg (33–44 lbs) per person
  • For trips to Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru, or multi-day safaris, additional specialized gear may be required

What to Pack

Comprehensive checklist organized by category

Footwear

  • Sturdy, comfortable, and preferably waterproof shoes (expect dirt and mud)
  • Tennis shoes or sandals for evenings at lodges
  • Comfortable, breathable socks

Clothing

  • Shorts (mid-thigh or longer)
  • Lightweight, breathable pants
  • Short-sleeved, neutral-colored shirts (avoid black, dark blue, and bright red)
  • Bathing suit (for lodges with pools or Zanzibar trips)
  • Long-sleeved shirt or light sweater for cooler evenings
  • Rain jacket or poncho
  • Women: Lightweight dresses/skirts that cover the knees; shoulders should also be covered when visiting villages
  • Men: Short-sleeve shirts with collars for villages or lodge dining
  • Keep valuable jewelry minimal
  • Laundry services are available at most lodges (often free or low cost)

Baggage

  • Day pack for daily excursions
  • Large waterproof duffel bag or backpack for main luggage

Accessories & Essentials

  • Sun hat or cap
  • Scarf for dust or sun protection
  • Sunglasses
  • Binoculars (vehicles often provide 2 pairs per group)
  • Maps and guidebooks
  • Headlamp or flashlight
  • Camera, memory cards, mini tripod
  • Personal music device or video camera
  • Travel pillow
  • Playing cards, games, or books
  • Energy bars and snacks
  • Mementos or small gifts for guides

Money

  • Small Tanzanian shillings and/or small US bills for tips and purchases
  • Larger US bills or travelers' checks for bigger purchases

Toiletries

  • Small towel
  • Roll of toilet paper (for some public restrooms)
  • Soap and shampoo (unscented or lightly scented preferred)
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Hand wipes
  • Lotion
  • Comb, mirror, glasses or contacts with solution
  • Unscented deodorant (avoid strong perfumes to reduce attracting insects)

Documents

  • Passport (with visa stamp or completed visa application; keep exact cash for visa fee, $50–$100 USD)
  • Yellow fever certificate (required if arriving from or transiting an endemic zone)
  • Travel and medical insurance documents
  • Address book or emergency contacts

Health & First Aid

  • Ibuprofen or paracetamol
  • Antiseptic cream
  • Band-Aids, bandages, and medical tape
  • Sunscreen (SPF 15+)
  • Diarrhea medicine
  • Anti-malaria tablets (as prescribed)
